Te Uru exhibition - Giorgio Griffa (b. 1936)
TAKE AWAYS: Griffa folds his canvas and in-between shows they take on a crease which reinforces the existence of a grid in his paintings. He works on unprimed canvas. The canvas has frayed edges and is installed by simple pins. The paint and dye is stained and blurred. He works on the floor and started with colour field art works. “Signs that belong to any hand, with thousands of years of memory.” He talks about the hierarchy of the canvas and stretchers on a standard stretched canvas, whereas when un-stretched the canvas is the protagonist.
