Aotearoa Art Fair - May 2025

At the art fair, I was drawn to the work by Hugo Koha Lindsay, presented by Gow Langsford Gallery. I have seen his work before and his line work, but these canvases were interesting because they were constructed in a manner whereby they showed a vertical seam. I wasn’t sure whether it was the canvas that had been sewn together, or that there were narrow vertical stretchers that had been bolted together, but I liked the seam effect, how it messed with the canvas, disjointed the lines and brought the question of structure and construction to the fore.

Marita Hewitt, A Yawning Gulf, 2024.

Artist, Marita Hewitt, used her own clothing in a patchwork of stitched panels. I am reminded of Isabelle Graw’s discussions around the presence of the artist in painting. I like the seems but thing the patchwork nature of the panel more akin to a quilt which I want to steer clear of. I notice she has edged her panel with a blanket stitch like edging.
