Aotearoa Art Fair - May 2025

At the art fair, I was drawn to the work by Hugo Koha Lindsay, presented by Gow Langsford Gallery. I have seen his work before and his line work, but these canvases were interesting because they were constructed in a manner whereby they showed a vertical seam. I wasn’t sure whether it was the canvas that had been sewn together, or that there were narrow vertical stretchers that had been bolted together, but I liked the seam effect, how it messed with the canvas, disjointed the lines and brought the question of structure and construction to the fore. Another artist, Marita Hewitt, used her own clothing in a patchwork of stitched panels. I am reminded of Isabelle Graw’s discussions around the presence of the artist in painting.
