Studio progress - June 2025

Ripping and stitching back together, (as inspired by Hugo Koha Lindsay’s SCRIPT NO 4: WITH REPETITION, RULES AND SYSTEMS, 2025).

Addition of hand embroidered elements from table cloths sourced from TradeMe. An acknowledgement of the skill and labour that went into making these embroidered images and how this was the main outlet for female creativity for many years. Domestic creativity.

Random marks and splashes and drips - having listened to lecture by Jenny Saville on Cy Twombly.

Back face of dye staining through canvas. Back face of stitching - machine and embroidery, as discussed during my supervisor meeting the Dan Arps, sometimes the back of the canvas is more interesting (and subtle) than the front face. I also liked how this referenced the back of tapestries and loose threads, repairs etc.

Tapestry/Quilt hangers. Discussion around installation. I have approached Daniel and Frames by Daniel to make up some quilt hangers for the July Seminar. These will be two pieces of pine, with two back counter sunk fixing screws and keyhole fixings. The edge detail will be routered. I will stain or oil the pine to bring the tone down slightly. For the final exhibition, if they are a success, I will choose a darker, mid tone wood like walnut or cherry birch. Hopefully, the canvas will hang down without touching the back wall and be heavy enough to hang without curling.
